The Westfield High School bowling team won its fourth consecutive team title and Elizabeth High School’s Vivian Luna repeated as champion of the female individual bracket to highlight Union County Tournament bowling action at Jersey Lanes last month.
In the final UCT match on Jan. 20, Roselle Park High School’s Michael Martins defeated defending champion Perry Cuccaro of Westfield, 217-198, to win the individual boys’ championship.
During the first day of competition Westfield earned the top seed for the team tournament on Jan. 19. In the eight-team tournament bracket (Baker format), the Blue Devils swept eighth-seeded Union, fifth-seeded Linden and sixth-seeded Rahway in each of their best-of-five Baker matches.
The Westfield lineup, directed by coach Ralph Corey and volunteer assistant Sebastian Rojas, included Perry Cuccaro, Gabe Dayon, Micah Berger, Ben Hsu, Matt Culhane, Dylan Scanlon and Kyle Brunt.
Rahway picked up the silver medals for their second-place finish and Roselle Park edged Linden to place third in the team tournament.
Coach Darius Singletary’s Rahway lineup included Alexander Paz, Nasir Pate, Richard Kluse, Shawn Mackay and Marcelino Torres. In addition to Martins, Owen Miller, Derek Wenskoski, Caitlyn Nicol, Kamila Cruz-Cordero, David Newhart and Alex Ley bowled well for coach Vincent Fucci and the Panthers.
In the girls final, Luna defeated RP’s Kamila Cruz-Cordiero, 239-169. Luna was the top seed in the girls’ bracket after the first round on Tuesday and the second round of three games. Cruz-Cordiero defeated teammate Caitlyn Nicol, 175-154, in the semifinal game.
Martins qualified as the second seed for the boys’ stepladder final. After defeating Chris Thomas of Union in the semifinal, 267-224, he faced the defending champion, Cuccaro.
Thomas, the third seed, edged Gabe Dayon of Westfield, 228-206, to advance
