HOW THEY GOT HERE: With a stout defense, and a little bit of luck, Hunterdon Central advanced for a chance to win its first-ever championship on Sunday night at Kean University. The Red Devils, the No. 7 team in the NJ.com Top 20, advanced in thier last two games on penalty kicks — first in the Central Jersey, Group 4 final against No. 11 Marlboro, and then against against No. 18 Washington Township in the Group 4 semifinals — to earn a rematch with Scotch Plains-Fanwood in the Group 4 final. Scotch Plains found itself in a dogfight in the Group 4 semis. The Raiders pulled out an overtime thriller when John Murphy assisted a Ryan Peterson goal.  Prior to that game, SPF knocked off a streaking squad in No. 9 Bridgewater-Raritan, 3-1, in the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 final.
