The Union Catholic track and field teams did it again!!
For the third straight year, both squads won Non-Public State Relay Championships at the Bennett Center on Wednesday night.
But this sweep was the most impressive and meaningful of them all because the girls broke a state record by winning their 10th straight A Division title by outclassing the field by winning five of the 9 events and racking up a meet-record tying 80 points.
UC’s 10 consecutive titles broke the tie the Vikings had with Hopewell Valley, which captured nine straight championships from 2002-2010. The 80 points for UC equaled the meet record total it rang up two years ago. Keep in mind that the maximum amount of points that can be scored is 90.
The 5 victories for the Vikings came in the 4×200 with an all-groups record of 1:42.67, the shuttle hurdles in 32.94, the sprint medley in 4:13.68, the 4×400 (4:00.16) and the shot put where Alyssa Kenol (32-4.50) and Emma Muir (30-9) combined on the win.
On the boys side, UC won 7 of the 9 events and came within six points of a perfect score by ringing up 84 to outscore runner-up Pope John by 26 points.
It was a complete team effort for the Vikings, who won the DMR in 11:08.73, the shuttle hurdles in 31.59, the 4×200 in 1:35.18, the 4×800 in 8:29.05, the sprint medley relay in 3:43.79, the 4×400 in 3:36.68, and the high jump. They also nabbed a runner-up finish in the pole vault and a third-place finish in the shot put.
