Sofia Espaillat is New Providence’s Union County Conference Female Athlete of the Week
Espaillat, a junior, has been a member of the NP T&F team since her freshman year, participating in both indoor and outdoor track. Last week, she won the Union County Championship in the javelin with a throw of 129’0″, a personal best and a new school record, besting a mark set way back in 1986.  Sofia is the first Pioneer to win a Union County javelin championship since Andy Urness in 2016, and the first Pioneer girl to take home a throwing championship since Madison Ricks won the shot put in 2011.
At this year’s Union County Conference Championships Sofia placed 1st in the Mountain Division javelin with what was a personal best throw of 115’5. Sofia had the best throw of any athlete in any division at that meet. She also placed 6th in the Mountain Division 400m run with a time of 61.91.
At the Union County Relay Championships, she helped our girls javelin relay place 2nd overall with a school record total of 290’1.
This past indoor season Sofia anchored our girls 4x400m to a first place finish in the Group 1 Central Sectional State Championships. She also placed 6th in the 55m dash at that same competition.
Additionally, Sofia has run on numerous school record relays.
