Wrestling stars Mike Cantwell and John Boyle have been selected as Scotch Plains-Fanwood’s Union County Conference Male Athletes of the Week.
Cantwell and Boyle, both juniors, both finished as runners-up at the NJSIAA District 13 Championships last Saturday at Millburn High School.
With their sensational performances on the mat, Cantwell and Boyle both qualified for the NJSIAA Region 4 Championships, which will be held this Friday and Saturday at Union High School..

Cantwell, wrestling in the 150-pound weight class, continued his torrid season when he raised his record to 22-9 by pinning Luke Talbert of Millburn in the quarterfinals in 1:27, and then Cantwell used a fireman’s carry to flatten Gavin Schnall of Summit in the semifinals in 4:59 to clinch a spot in the Region 4 Championships! Cantwell, through his blue collar work ethic and passion for the sport, has become one the biggest breakouts stars in the state this season!
Boyle, wrestling at 215, improved to 25-10 by pinning Sam Fishkin of Millburn in the quarterfinals and decked Nate Engdahl of Ridge in the semis to earn his place in Region 4.
“Mike Cantwell and John Boyle have been working tremendously hard throughout the season,” SPF coach Marc Fabiano told John Mooney of TAPinto SPF. “They are the last 2 wrestlers to leave the practice room because they are always doing the extra. They had an unbelievable run in the District tournament, and we couldn’t be more proud of them.”
