All season, the Union Catholic girls 4×200-meter relay squad knew they had the talent and potential to do something historic.
They were right!!!
Sophomore Taylor Aska, senior Ajanae Thompson, junior Leah Gould, and sophomore Taylor Cox burned up the track at Saturday’s 115th Millrose Games at the NY Armory by blasting a 1:38.78 to take down the state record!! That broke the state record of 1:38.99 set by Columbia when it finished first at the Millrose Games in 2014, and is the 4th fastest time in the nation this season.
UC finished second in the race behind Bullis of Maryland, who ran 1:37.06.
The Union Catholic girls also dropped a red hot time to win the 4×800
Senior Maameyaa Nyinah (2:16.80), freshman Jimmiea King (2:20.68), junior Peyton Hollis (2:14.83) and Kaleigh Gunsiorowski (2:11.82) combined to win in 9:04.12, the second-fastest time in the country this season. It was a strong return for Hollis, who was running her first race since the Non-Public A XC Championships in November. She had been sidelined with a leg injury.
The UC girls 4×400 also had a strong showing as Vonya Gould, Kiara Fleming, Alexandra Moore, and Leilani Gibson combined to run 4:10.90 to finish third.
On the boys side, the UC had a pair of great performances.
The Vikings finished fourth in the 4×800 with a US No. 5 time of 7:55.18, and third in the 4×400 with a NJ No. 2 time of 3:23.45.
In the 4×800, Sean Wilson, Ryan Cichocki, Caudell Cajuste, and Jimmy Wischusen carried the baton for the Vikings. Wischusen, a junior, split 1:54.3 on the anchor leg. In the 4×400, Avery Atexide, Al-Qamar Rojas, Emerson McKindra and Marcus McCoy shared the batonl.
