The Union Catholic boys distance medley relay squad was looking to drop a fast time when they took the line at the Varsity Classic on Monday at the Armory’s New Balance Track and Field Center in New York.
They got much more than that.
How about the fastest time in state indoor history!!!
That’s right, the foursome of Myles Plummer, Nick Givan, Caudell Cajuste, and Shane Brosnan combined to finish first in 10:01.75!! That breaks the NJ state record of 10:02.99 set by Christian Brothers Academy when the Colts placed second at the 2011 New Balance Nationals.
UC’s 10:01.75 also places them No. 7 in US high school indoor history, and is the fastest time in the nation this season.
Plummer, a senior, led off for UC with a 3:03.97 1,200 leg. Givan, a senior, followed with a 50.05 400 carry as he opened a five-second lead on Ridge. Cajuste, a junior, maintained the lead with a 2:00.15 800 leg, and the Harvard-bound Brosnan put an exclamation point on the electrifying performance with a 4:07.57 anchor!!!
In a race dominated by NJ teams, Ridge placed second in 10:14.82, No. 2 in the nation this season, Westfield was third in a US No. 4 10:24.86, West Windsor-Plainsboro North was fourth in a US No. 5 10:25.19, and Christian Brothers Academy was sixth in 10:31.68.
