James Fitz and Isabella Fuentes were crowned Union County Tournament champions on Wednesday at Jersey Lanes in Linden. Fitz, the top seed for the step-ladder finals, defeated second-seeded Luis Torres, 234-211 in the championship match of the individual competition. A streak of six straight strikes helped propel Fitz to the title. Torres, the 2017 UCT champion, advanced to his third UCT individual final. Fitz finished Monday’s action in second place with a 706 series, 32 pins behind the leader, but rolled a 704 series on Wednesday to garner the top seed. He drew a bye to the final match.
Cranford’s Jake Cermak, who bowled a 300 on Monday, defeated teammate Allen Potts in the first match of the stepladder, but was eliminated by Roselle’s Elijah Boone, the third seed. Boone, who lost to teammate Torres in the semifinal match, rolled a 289 game on Monday.
In the girl’s tournament, Union Catholic’s Fuentes, the top seed for the step-ladder finals, defeated second-seeded Ashley Noel, of Elizabeth, the defending UCT champion, in the final match, 201-178. Fuentes started the day in fourth place, 66 pins behind the leader, but she rolled a 666 series on Wednesday, the best of the day by 69 pins. Noel, who reached her third UCT final, defeated teammate Vivian Luna in the semifinal, 211-192.
